If you feel as though your health is in jeopardy or you’re unable to wait for an appointment with your primary care doctor, a visit to an emergency room in New Jersey might be the best option. Even with all of the medical equipment and staff in an emergency room, there are times when a misdiagnosis can be made that could result in delayed treatment and the possibility of lingering impacts on your body. If you or a loved one believes you have experienced an incorrect diagnosis from the emergency room, speak with an attorney about filing a claim.

Heart Attack

One of the conditions that are often misdiagnosed in an emergency room that can sometimes lead to filing a medical malpractice claim is a heart attack. There are several conditions that can mimic a heart attack, such as indigestion or a strained muscle. Lab work is often performed as well as an EKG and other tests to determine if you’re having a heart attack as these tests can look at the heart’s rhythm and how much oxygen the heart is getting.

Sepsis

An infection that impacts the blood, sepsis can be misdiagnosed for other infections, especially in its early stages. The white blood cell count might not be at a level that indicates that an infection is present. If the white blood cell count is elevated, then it could be misdiagnosed as another type of infection if there are other symptoms present, such as a stomachache.

Rectal Bleeding

In the event that you experience rectal bleeding and need to go to the emergency room, a test can be performed to determine if you have hemorrhoids or if you could have colon cancer. If a colonoscopy isn’t performed, then this could lead to a delay in treatment if rectal bleeding is a sign of cancer.

After visiting an emergency room, a second opinion might be warranted if you feel that you have not received the proper diagnosis.
